Washington bans formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in cosmetics

In a US first for consumer safety, Washington State has enacted a sweeping ban on all formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products. Strengthening the 2023 Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, the new rule prohibits the intentional addition of any formaldehyde releaser, listing 25 common ingredients. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen linked to leukaemia, respiratory issues and skin irritation. A 2023 state study found elevated levels in lotions, creams and hair products marketed to women of colour, as well as in salons where professionals face daily exposure, setting a national precedent for stronger health protections in the beauty industry.

EU bans TPO chemical in gel nail polishes

The European Union has officially banned trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a photo initiator used in some gel nail polishes and cosmetics, after classifying it as a reproductive toxicant. Effective September, the prohibition covers all TPO-containing products, which must be withdrawn from the market and cannot be sold, supplied or used. TPO helps gel polish harden under UV light, making it popular in salons for its durability and quick drying. The ban targets only products with TPO, not gel polish overall, according to the European Commission and the Nail Manufacturer Council on Safety.

Shellworks unveils world’s first home compostable pipette dropper

London-based sustainable packaging innovator Shellworks has launched the world’s first fully home-compostable pipette dropper, eliminating glass, plastic, and rubber. The dropper is crafted from Vivomer, a proprietary material derived from upcycled plant waste. The single-material dropper mimics glass and plastic yet decomposes like cellulose, leaving no toxins. Backed by £4.6 million in seed funding, Shellworks can produce 2.4 million units annually and is already partnering with brands such as People Care Planet Care and Sam McKnight’s haircare line. The company is also expanding Vivomer into jars, bottles and caps, collectively replacing 90 tonnes of plastic and advancing eco-friendly beauty packaging worldwide.
