A barber’s chair is no longer just a place for routine grooming. For today’s man, it is where identity takes shape, confidence is refined, and personal style comes to life. A great haircut has the power to transform, while a well-executed hair tattoo adds an unmistakable layer of individuality. Behind every striking look is an artist who understands not only technique, but also personality.
Modern barbering demands equal measures of creativity and discipline. It is a craft shaped by evolving trends, sharper techniques, and a generation of clients who see grooming as a form of self-expression.
This year, one of the industry’s finest talents stepped into the spotlight. Kunal Raut earned national recognition after winning the Hair Tattoo category at the Modern Barber Competition, PBI Delhi 2026. He reflects on the journey behind the title, the discipline that defines his work, and what it takes to stand out in a rapidly evolving profession.
WHERE HAIR MEETS ART
For Raut, creativity has always been instinctive. Hair styling allows him to transform a client’s appearance, while hair tattoos provide the artistic canvas through which he expresses his imagination.
To him, the two disciplines are inseparable. A technically strong haircut lays the foundation, while a thoughtfully designed hair tattoo elevates the final look. It is a philosophy that has driven him to continually refine his skills, embrace emerging trends, and stay ahead of the curve.
MASTERING THE CRAFT
Raut believes every haircut should be tailored to the individual. From analysing face shape to creating precision fades and texture, every detail is considered before the first cut is made. Understanding a client’s hair type, personality, and preferences allows him to create a style that feels authentic to the wearer.
His signature approach combines the careful use of clippers, scissors, and detailing trimmers to create polished, personalised results. The objective is always the same: to deliver a complete look that reflects the client’s personality.
THE WINNING MOMENT
Competing at the Modern Barber Competition was an opportunity to showcase both technical ability and artistic vision on a national platform. Preparation involved weeks of practising under time constraints while carefully planning designs that would demonstrate originality and precision.
His competition concept centred on combining contemporary barbering with creative hair tattoo artistry. “When my name was announced as the winner, all my hard work felt worth it,” he says. He credits his family for their constant support and believes unwavering dedication has been the foundation of his success. “This win has motivated me to become an even better artist.”
Like many successful artists, Raut’s journey began with mastering the basics. Building strong technical foundations gave him the confidence to experiment and develop a style that blends international influences with Indian aesthetics. That balance between precision and creativity has become the hallmark of his work.
KEEPING PACE WITH CHANGE
The barbering industry is changing rapidly, fuelled by social media, global trends, and increasingly informed clients. Raut believes success today depends not only on technical expertise, but also on earning a client’s trust through consistently high-quality work.
He notes that the demand for customised, premium grooming experiences continues to rise, with clients seeking creative haircuts and clean, precise hair tattoos. For emerging artists, staying current with trends while consistently delivering quality has never been more important.
A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR BARBERING
Looking ahead, Raut sees tremendous opportunity for the profession. Education, social media, and greater global exposure are opening doors for talented barbers to showcase their work beyond local markets, making the industry increasingly competitive and exciting.
For aspiring hair tattoo artists, Raut believes success begins with strong fundamentals. Technical skills in haircutting, fading, detailing, hygiene, design, and client communication all play an equally important role. Combined with consistent practice, they create the foundation for a successful career. Above all, he encourages young professionals to remain lifelong learners. “Do not fear criticism but learn from it,” he says.
His advice is simple: define your own identity, stay passionate, remain patient, and approach every day with consistency. These qualities, he believes, are the true ingredients of lasting success.
The Art of Hair Tattoos
For Raut, hair tattoos are never an afterthought. They are an extension of the haircut, requiring precision, balance, and creativity. His process follows three key stages:
• Understanding the client’s personality and preferences.
• Sketching a rough design and deciding on its placement.
• Refining the design with a focus on symmetry, balance, and intricate detailing.
