Every space tells a story. Whether it’s your room, your favourite cinema, or your go-to bookstore, these places make you feel something simply by being there. That’s the power of design. Thoughtful interiors create an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.
Marie Claire, which recently opened its first branch in Mumbai’s Matunga, wanted its clients to feel exactly that. Every guest should walk in, be struck by the luxury of the space, and continue thinking about it long after their appointment. “We wanted every guest to experience the feeling of walking into a premium European salon,” says Dr Vandana Bhardwaj, Director and Spokesperson, Marie Claire Salon, India.
The design language draws on ontemporary Parisian elegance, blending timeless sophistication with modern luxury. Every element was curated to feel warm, inviting, and uncluttered, allowing clients to fully relax while enjoying world-class beauty services.
TONES THAT SET THE MOOD
Marie Claire’s colour palette reflects the brand’s legacy. Soft blush pink forms the dominant hue, creating a space that feels warm, welcoming, and cheerful. It is complemented by natural oak wood finishes, ivory and white tones, and subtle black accents that add balance and sophistication. The pastel backdrop introduces warmth and serenity, while natural wood lends an organic touch, ensuring the salon feels inviting rather than clinical.
The materials were chosen with the same intention. Premium wood finishes, high-quality laminates, mirrors, textured surfaces, and durable flooring were selected to withstand the demands of a busy salon while remaining hygienic and easy to maintain. “We deliberately avoided dark, heavy colours and overly ornate finishes because we wanted the interiors to feel bright, spacious, timeless, and unmistakably Parisian,” says Bhardwaj. “Our goal was to create a salon that photographs beautifully, enhances the client experience, and reflects the premium positioning of the Marie Claire Paris brand.”
MORE THAN JUST PRETTY
A salon must be more than visually appealing. Hygiene, durability, and ease of maintenance played a critical role in planning the interiors. Salon environments demand surfaces that withstand frequent cleaning, water exposure, hair colour products, and daily wear, making durable, easy-to-maintain finishes essential. “Our philosophy is that good design should not only be beautiful but also practical and sustainable,” she says.
Balancing staff efficiency with a seamless client journey is where the real design skill lies. From the welcoming reception to styling stations, wash areas, nail services, and skincare rooms, every section has been designed to optimise movement without compromising privacy or comfort. The layout minimises unnecessary movement for the team while ensuring clients enjoy a calm and effortless experience throughout their visit.
THE ART OF WORKING WITHIN LIMITS
Every location presents its own challenges, whether structural columns, varying floor plans, or natural lighting conditions. Rather than viewing these as obstacles, the team treats them as opportunities to create tailored solutions.
Strategic lighting, mirrors, and intelligent space planning help every salon feel spacious, bright, and welcoming while maintaining Marie Claire’s signature design language across different cities.
A LINGERING RETREAT
The client experience begins the moment someone walks through the door. That first impression, and the feeling clients take home, becomes one of the salon’s strongest marketing tools.
The reception welcomes guests warmly, while spacious styling stations create comfort without feeling crowded. Wash areas are designed for relaxation, and dedicated treatment rooms offer privacy for skincare and specialised services. Every transition has been planned to reduce stress and elevate comfort, allowing each appointment to feel like a luxurious retreat.
A SYMPHONY OF LIGHT AND SOUND
Among all the design elements in a salon, lighting and acoustics have the greatest influence on how luxurious a space feels. At Marie Claire, ambient, task, and accent lighting work together to create the right mood while ensuring professionals have the visibility they need to work with precision.
The acoustics have been designed to create an atmosphere that feels lively without becoming noisy, allowing clients to enjoy conversations, consultations, and treatments in comfort. Carefully curated music completes the experience, while lighting, sound, and music together create an environment that feels calm and sophisticated.
THE SPACE SELLS THE STORY
Design is one of the strongest expressions of a brand’s identity. It sparks conversation, encourages social sharing, and becomes a powerful marketing tool. Marie Claire recognised this from the outset, ensuring its interiors reflected the style, elegance, and innovation for which the brand is globally known.
For Marie Claire, salon design is far more than décor. It is an extension of the brand itself. Premium interiors build trust, reinforce quality, and communicate the level of expertise clients can expect before the first service even begins.
“We will continue incorporating smart technology, sustainable materials, energy-efficient lighting, and evolving design elements that enhance client comfort while preserving the timeless elegance that defines Marie Claire Paris,” Bhardwaj shares. “Our goal is to remain contemporary without losing our signature identity.”
