The modern client is rewriting the skincare rulebook. Today’s consumers are no longer looking for products simply labelled ‘for men’. Instead, they are seeking clinically backed formulations that address real skin concerns with proven efficacy. As a result, professional skincare is shifting away from gendered marketing and towards skin biology, where performance matters more than perception.
It is a philosophy that sits at the heart of CodeSkin. Rather than formulating products for men or women, this homegrown brand develops solutions around the concerns practitioners encounter every day, whether it’s acne and pigmentation, or sensitivity and barrier repair. For Oscar Pereira, Founder and Formulator, understanding skin will always be more important than understanding demographics.
SKIN DOESN’T READ THE LABEL
CodeSkin’s professional range is positioned around skin concerns, reflecting what Pereira believes is a more meaningful approach to formulation. “I’ve always believed that skin doesn’t read the label. It responds to biology. Acne, pigmentation, sensitivity, and barrier damage are not gender-related concerns but skin concerns. That’s why we built CodeSkin around skin biology instead of gender-based marketing.”
That philosophy informs every stage of product development. “Every formulation begins with understanding the biology behind the concern. Then we select ingredients that target those pathways in a scientifically meaningful way. Our objective has never been to create just another product but to always keep working towards solving a skin problem.”
MADE IN INDIA, BUILT ON SCIENCE
Every CodeSkin professional formulation is researched, developed, and manufactured in India, but Pereira believes local manufacturing is only one part of the story. “To me, ‘Make in India’ means much more than manufacturing. It means building formulation expertise, scientific capability, and intellectual property within the country.”
Bringing research, manufacturing, and quality control together under one roof has enabled the company to work more efficiently. “Having research, manufacturing, and quality control under one roof allows us to innovate faster, validate ideas quickly, and maintain complete control over product quality. It also gives us the flexibility to respond rapidly to changing professional needs.”
EVERY INGREDIENT MUST EARN ITS PLACE
As ingredient literacy grows among both professionals and consumers, Pereira believes scientific evidence should always take precedence over trends. “We never choose ingredients for how fashionable they are but because they solve a problem. Every ingredient is evaluated for its mechanism of action, published scientific evidence, stability, compatibility, safety, and most importantly, how it performs in the finished formulation. A great ingredient can still disappoint if the formulation around it is poorly designed,” he says.
That same philosophy applies to sourcing. “We don’t think in terms of imported versus Indian ingredients. We evaluate scientific merit. If an ingredient from Europe, Japan, or Korea represents the best available science, we’ll use it. Equally, if an Indian innovation is supported by strong research and delivers consistent performance, it deserves a place in our formulations.”
FROM CLINICAL NEED TO PROVEN PERFORMANCE
Every new formulation begins with identifying a genuine clinical need rather than following ingredient trends. Multiple prototypes are developed and refined before they are evaluated by professionals. However, laboratory success alone is not enough. “Before a product reaches the market, it must prove itself in the hands of professionals. If it doesn’t perform consistently in the treatment room, it isn’t ready for launch,” says Pereira. That commitment extends to manufacturing, where every raw material and production parameter is carefully monitored to ensure consistency across every batch.
But for Pereira, product development continues long after a formulation leaves the laboratory. Feedback from aestheticians and dermatology clinics plays a crucial role in refining products, treatment protocols, textures, and packaging. “Professional feedback is one of our most valuable sources of innovation. The laboratory tells us how a formulation should perform. Professionals tell us how it performs in everyday practice. We don’t see feedback as criticism. Instead, we consider it as an extension of our research and development process.”
THE ROAD AHEAD
Pereira believes India’s greatest opportunity lies in becoming recognised not simply as a manufacturing destination but as a global leader in cosmetic science. “If Indian brands continue investing in research, quality manufacturing, clinical validation and professional education, brands like CodeSkin will not simply manufacture products for the world. We will create the next generation of professional skincare innovations. That, to me, is the future. Not just ‘Made in India’ but ‘Innovated in India’,” he signs off.
