FLORIAN HUREL HAIR COUTURE: Where Scalp Care Meets Ritual

Charlene Flanagan tried their scalp treatment that prioritises balance, precision, and long-term scalp health. Here’s what happened.

The soothing scent of lavender lingered in the air. Ambient music hummed softly in the background, steady enough to quiet the mind. Somewhere between that and the resonant clang of a sound bath, I could feel gentle currents travel from my head down to my bare toes. The lights were dimmed just enough to blur the edges of the room, leaving me cocooned on a massage table, snug beneath the signature brown towel bearing the embroidered mark, ‘Florian Hurel Hair Couture’.

I was there to experience their scalp treatment, or what we commonly refer to as the Korean Hair Spa. With Korean beauty steadily finding its footing in India, it was inevitable that I would make my way to one of Florian’s four Mumbai outlets. Curiosity, after all, has a way of getting the better of you, and I decided to give in. After plenty of recommendations, I found myself at the Walkeshwar salon, their flagship outlet.

DIAGNOSIS BEFORE INDULGENCE

It began, as most good treatments do, with an analysis of my hair and scalp. As expected, mine leaned oily. What I hadn’t quite accounted for, however, was the sensitivity of my scalp, something the camera revealed with quiet honesty, despite my reliance on gentle shampoos and conditioners.

Following the analysis, the treatment began. Easing rather than launching into motion, the ritual felt entirely in keeping with the mood of the room, which brings me back to where this all started: adequately relaxed and ready to be pampered. Because if there’s anything Mumbai’s weather and long train rides demand of you, it is pause. And that is exactly what this felt like.

TOUCH, CLEANSE, RESET

My therapist began not with product, but with touch. Before anything met the scalp, a series of tools set the pace. A wide-tooth wooden comb moved in purposeful but gentle strokes to awaken the scalp, while the bokoma, a massage tool with fine metal prongs, delivered more invigorating motions that heightened receptiveness without overwhelming it. The contrast was subtle but effective, priming the scalp for what came next. Only then was the clarifying solution applied, expertly worked through to lift buildup and excess oil. A gentle veil of steam followed, just enough to open the pores without overpowering the senses.

The cleanse itself was slow and considered, less like a routine wash and more like a reset. For an oily scalp like mine, the focus was clear: purification without stripping away the natural oils. Then, a head massage tool and hand techniques worked in tandem, easing away the last remnants of tension I may have carried, while encouraging circulation in a way that felt almost meditative.

REBALANCING AND TREATMENT LAYERING

With my scalp thoroughly cleansed, the treatment shifted towards balance. A lightweight ampoule was applied at the roots, while a more nourishing mask was smoothed through the lengths, ensuring the hair itself wasn’t overlooked.

A second round of steam allowed everything to settle in, sealing hydration where needed. Nothing felt heavy or overdone, just quietly recalibrated. From there, the experience expanded beyond the scalp. A focused massage moved from my forehead and into the neck and shoulders, sending me deeper into serenity. The therapist’s firm but soft and studied strokes, followed by the use of cooling glass globes on my face, brought a contrasting sense of calm to the overall experience.

A SLOW, GROUNDED FINISH

The rinse was thorough, leaving no trace of residue behind. And just when the treatment felt complete, a final gesture brought it all together. A warm potli, pressed and rolled along the back, deepened my sense of ease from head to toe, grounding the experience in a way that will stay with me well beyond the treatment room.

By the time we reached the blow-dry, the shift was subtle but undeniable. My hair and scalp felt lighter and more responsive, restored to a rhythm that had long been forgotten.

Florian Hurel’s scalp treatment isn’t an indulgence for the sake of it; it is care with intent. Measured, thoughtful, and rooted in balance.
