Richard Ashforth, International Creative Director, Vidal Sassoon, speaks about his approach to hair artistry and the need to create strong foundation in education with Kanishka Ramchandani.

Now, Richard Ashforth, International Creative Director, returns to Vidal Sassoon with a vision that’s as fearless as it is refined. Year 2025 marked a major milestone for him as he received his fifth nomination for British Hairdresser of the Year, which speaks volumes of his continued relevance, innovation and influence.

On his recent visit to India for a collaboration with Schwarzkopf Professional, Ashforth spoke to us about his art, his craft and his constant need to rewrite the rules of modern hairdressing. Here’s an excerpt from an exclusive interview with him.

HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY IN HAIRDRESSING BEGIN, AND WHAT HAS KEPT YOU INSPIRED OVER THE YEARS?

I originally planned to study fashion, but while waiting to start university, I took a part-time job as a hairdressing assistant. I quickly fell in love with the industry, and never looked back.

The core philosophies Vidal embodied precision, suitability and the pursuit of beauty. They continue to inspire and shape my work to this day.

HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE VIDAL SASSOON ACADEMY SHAPED YOUR APPROACH TO EDUCATION AND CREATIVITY?

Sassoon fundamentally shaped my approach to hair, giving me both a strong creative perspective and an exceptional education. By deeply understanding the rules, I gained the freedom to break them with purpose— empowering me to become the strongest hairdresser I could be.

As the International Creative Director, I oversee all creative aspects of the business—from developing our teams to guiding collections, branding and overall artistic direction.
