Known for blending salon-ready practicality with runway-worthy creativity, Bony Sasidharan, Artistic Ambassador, L’Oréal Professionnel, has carved a niche for himself in hairdressing, colouration and education. Two decades ago, when he first stepped into the industry, hairdressing in India looked vastly different. “Access to the latest trends, tools and techniques was scarce, and clients rarely strayed from the safe zone,” he recalls. Fast forward to today, and the shift has been dramatic driven by the explosion of online inspiration and global exposure. “The hair industry has finally earned the popularity and respect it always deserved,” he says.
For Sasidharan, hair artistry is anything from a salon-friendly everyday style to avant-garde creations that belong on a runway. “Hair is a canvas, and you can throw all the colours on it,” he says, underscoring the limitless nature of his craft.
“Intuition will always lead my scissors — the technique simply follows.”
When it comes to chasing trends, Sasidharan is discerning. “I look for techniques relatable to our market colours that complement Indian skin tones, styles with movement,” he explains. His influences range from fashion houses to photographers, designers and fellow hairdressers. “It’s no longer just celebrities driving trends inspiration is everywhere.”
Asked to define the balance between technique and instinct, Sasidharan refuses to choose sides. “I wouldn’t draw a line, but I will always place my intuition ahead of a technique,” he affirms. For him, working with a client’s natural texture is key, and his gut feeling often dictates the direction. “Techniques are just tools to achieve what you visualise.”
Sasidharan believes the leap from good to great comes with education. “Even the best need to practice and learn new techniques. Taking time out for your personal growth is nonnegotiable,” he says.
His encounters with young stylists have left him impressed: “They have the fire, they’re inspired they just need the right guidance to channel that energy.”
For Sasidharan, a well-curated collection is both inspirational and educational. “It should capture the essence of what’s coming next in the market. Great trend prediction is the magic ingredient,” he says.
While social media can shape a stylist’s direction, Bony advises focusing on authenticity. “Build a brand that speaks your style. Show client journeys. Share tips, tricks, quick styling techniques people want transformation and professional insight.”
His ultimate dream is to see Indian hair artists not just participate but lead on the global stage. “We should be trendsetters, global educators, runway regulars and stars in the world’s best salons.”
