“Preparation is the key”
Prathamesh Sawant, Owner, Classic Hair Therapy, andjurymemberofModern Barber India Competition, discusses the talent and passion of creative barbers.
What are your expectations from the next edition of Modern Barber India Competition?
I was very surprised and impressed to see the response to the last competition. In the next edition, I would expect a lot more people to sign up and I expect to see more talented barbers competing.
Why should barbers participate in the competition?
The Modern Barber India Competition allows barbers to showcase their skills and test their abilities to be the best in the barbering industry. This will let their talent be showcased on a bigger platform and open doors to more opportunities in their career.
Which categories would you like the competition to have (that are presently not there), and why?
I would love to see the shaving category added. Indian barbering has a rich history of some of the best shavers in the world. I would love to see that talent being tested at the competition.
Why should salons support their staff members when they are entering Modern Barber Competition?
Salons should support their staff as it helps the salons build reputation and credibility through their barbers. It helps motivate their staff and builds retention of their staff. It also helps attract more talent towards the shop and aids marketing on social media and networking.
What would you like the competitors to work on before they decide to enter the competition?
I would suggest the barbers to work on their fundamentals very well. Preparation is the key, making sure they understand the rules of the competition well and they carry their tools accordingly. The overall aspect of barbering is judged, not only skills, but aspects such as hygiene and professional etiquettes are being considered.
How can the participants make the most of the recognition that they get as they compete in such a prestigious competition?
The Modern Barber India Competition sees a huge audience as spectators, so your talent is on display on a big platform. Not only that, you have the best brands and companies who look out for talents they could collaborate with or engage with to represent their brands. It’s a massive opportunity for barbers looking to make a name for themselves.

Tips on how to work faster, with more precision and clarity during the competition.
I think time management and very good self-awareness are key points. One should make sure they have clarity in their plans and approach towards their work and make minimum do-overs while participating in a time bound competition. Preparation of the tool kit and practising in time bound sessions helps prepare for the competition better.
