ASTELLAR JOURNEY

Sakkas’ journey with the British Hairdressing Awards began in 1999 when he won Newcomer of the Year. “I was hooked from then on,” he recalls. “I went on to win London Hairdresser of the Year three times and entered the Hall of Fame.”

For him, entering awards is more than just recognition. “It gives you a focus, something to work towards, and an opportunity to be creative,” says Sakkas.

THE THRILL OF AHAT-TRICK

“Winning for the first time was a huge moment in my career, but to win it for a third time is incredible! There are so many people who I need to thank, from the TONI&GUY team to my family who have supported me along the way.”

When asked about the secret to winning multiple awards, Sakkas humbly dismisses the notion of a magic formula. “It’s all about working hard, finding a team of creatives you want to work with, and having some fun while being creative.”

VISION BEHIND THE ECLIPSE COLLECTION

The winning collection, aptly named ‘Eclipse,’ centres around the concept of contrast. “Contrast lies at the heart of Eclipse, which embraces fractured, asymmetrical elements that mimic the unpredictability of light and shadow,” Sakkas explains.

Hair textures, colours and shapes were meticulously designed to reflect this duality, creating looks that are both striking and harmonious. “Eclipse draws inspiration from the world of hair and fashion, where contrast and duality often define iconic looks,” he adds.

CREATIVE TEAM SYNERGY

Sakkas attributes much of his creative success to long-standing collaborations with his team. “I have worked with the same team for my collections over many years – Jack Eames on photography and Lans Nguyen-Grealis on makeup,” he notes.

This deep understanding and synergy have allowed them to seamlessly align their visions. “They know what I am thinking and what I want. And because we know each other so well, they push me and my ideas so we always get the absolute best from any shoot we work on,” Sakkas elaborates.

CREATING AWARD-WINNING COLLECTIONS

Sakkas explains, “Make sure hair, makeup, and clothes all work together. Remember it is a hair shoot, so keep everything else simple and understated to let the hairstyles shine. Work with a team who have the same vision as you but will push you to try new things.

Shoot for yourself and no one else. Don’t shoot for the awards; shoot for yourself. Create a collection that is true to you and shows your skills, passion and vision. Shoot in colour and black and white – both will be beautiful but give a different dimension to your finished look.

Stay focused – don’t be distracted by whacky ideas. Take your time when cropping images. Full-length shots have a totally different feeling compared to close-ups, so choose wisely and don’t rush this process.”

INSPIRING CREATIVITY

Sakkas believes that his collections should serve as inspiration but encourages hairdressers to bring their unique touch to the creations. “My collection is an inspiration, but what you create should reflect your own style and ultimately inspire someone else,” he advises.

Whether it’s a client seeking a haircut or a hairdresser looking to innovate, Sakkas’ advice is clear: “Always keep it beautiful, modern, and aspirational.”

Sakkas’ journey and achievements are a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration and dedication. His words of wisdom resonate deeply with aspiring and established hairdressers alike, offering a blueprint for artistic success. As Indian hairdressers look to elevate their craft, he lays emphasis on ‘authenticity, innovation and teamwork.’
